John Scalzi Discusses His Writing Income

On his blog, science fiction writer John Scalzi discusses his writing income for 2006. It pretty interesting.

One thing of note is that he started his writing career in 1999 with a shareware novel. What this means is he published a novel on his website to be freely read by anyone who wished to do so.

Oh yeah, I’m still here.

boy, what i wouldn’t give to make HALF of what he makes…

oh to be a professional writer, instead of a professional whiner.

Daniel, just checked out that link you gave. It certainly makes interesting reading and I love this line:

“So although Old Man’s War was published in January 2005, I waited seventeen months to get my first royalty check.”

17 months for a royalty check! Not what you would call a get rich quick scheme.

But the numbers over time made some very instructive reading. Keep plugging at it, I guess, and it will come. There’s a lesson there for all of us (applies to a lot of life’s activities, too).

Thanks for these links. Anything having to do with writing always interests me.
