Catching Up and 1018 Press
I’ve brought out some older projects and started revising them with a fresh set of eyes so to speak. One thing that I’ve been having trouble with is the location of markets appropriate for much of the material I have. This is my fault because I have not spent the time needed in searching the markets out.
On an unrelated note, I’m beginning to realize that the online writing community is amazingly robust and, for the most part, quite open and friendly. The one thing that I have heard (and I’m beginning to see it for myself) is that online forums can be problematic. I think that is the case with most online forums no matter what their subject matter is. One thing that is intolerable, though, is when those that run/moderate the forums resort to intellectually dishonest, ego-driven tactics. This is precisely why I’ve withdrawn my participation in the forum over at 1018 Press. I’ve received a number of e-mails from forum participants expressing their dismay at the editor’s behavior which leads me to wonder if the editor is aware of the beating his integrity is taking because of his own actions. Either way, I wish 1018 Press the best.

Hello again,
I agree the online writing community is mainly friendly and, I have found, supportive of each other. I have been reaching out to other poets and writers recently myself. I haven’t been to 1018 Press though. After this post, I think I’ll steer clear of there.
Bye for now.

Good to hear from you again, Sara.
The whole reaching out thing is difficult and slow at first, but like a snowball, it grows. Or so I’m finding out.
Take care.

Daniel, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve taken a dislike to something on the forum, though I should point out that accusing some of intellectual dishonesty and outsized ego without evidence is pure troll behavior. Further, posting such baseless attacks after receiving a rejection isn’t a great way to improve your own reputation. Editors and publishers in the small-press realm do communicate with one another.
Thanks for your interest in 1018 Press. I hope you are successful elsewhere.

Sam, or should I say James, since your real name is James Kosub. You attack me on your forum, then delete the post when your hypocrisy is pointed out, then make a feeble attempt at a snarky comment on a post two months old and you accuse me of being a troll? No wonder your reputation precedes your name all over the net. One need only Google “James Kosub” to see just how popular you are. A note, the evidence isn’t there because you deleted it. No worries though, plenty of people witnessed it and have made private comments concerning your behavior.
I’ve received several e-mails from people attesting to just how popular you are.
You insinuate that I attacked you because of your rejection. You need to work on your reading comprehension, James. I simply pointed out your typical and well known behavior and made it a point to say that your childish behavior wasn’t what led to the rejection.
Also, your veiled threat didn’t go unnoticed which is very typical of you. You’re right, editors in the small-press realm do communicate with each other, but since your reputation is what it is, I’m not worried much. In fact, you make me laugh, James Kosub.

Just found this via a search after seeing a post on the 1018 Press blog. Though Hawken is denying it, I’ll 2nd the assertion that Sam Hawken is, indeed, James Kosub.
In case he decides to delete it later here’s Hawken’s blog post:
I’m getting a little burned out.

Well, I have a rejected writer (and former forum member) posting defamatory comments on his blog and accusing me of being someone I’m not, a potential reopening of a harassment case that completely ruined my family’s life last year and a whole host of other little, annoying issues all related to my operation of 1018 Press.
Most of the time I like doing this. Days like today… I wonder what’s the point. I spend time, money and energy finding the very best stories, packaging them and presenting them to the public, and then some knob who’s angry about having his story rejected starts trying to smear me.
I want to keep wanting to pursue this little sideline in the hope that it’ll eventually develop into something that will enrich the careers of all involved. But right now I’m not wanting so much.

James Kosub aka Sam Hawken aka The Complete Loser only dreams of being a respected editor, publisher or author when, in fact, he is none of those things. You have nothing to worry about, Daniel. He’s in contact with nobody because he is a nobody. He’s desperate wanna-be with delusions of talent and influence who yearns to have either.
The problem today is that anybody with a broadband connection can have a blog or website and anybody with a credit card can self-publish with POD. He’s one of the vast, pathetic horde who delude themselves into thinking that means they are an author or publisher.
James Kosub aka Sam Hawken aka The Complete Loser is a sad individual and as soon as he gets himself into trouble, he immediately erases all trace of himself on the Internet, pimps his wife out to email his victims with pleas to delete their posts about him “for the sake of our austistic son,” and then after a few months, he reappears under a new name to do it all over again. You’d think his wife, if she was so concerned about how her husband’s self-destructive behavior reflects on her son, would tell Kosub aka Hawken aka The Complete Loser to stay off the Internet, stop pretending he’s a publisher, and stop harassing people.
